Hi. I am the Captain of the ESN Piett. I think. Teucrian knows.
Oh yeah.
Each day, you may use one of the following powers:
THAT'S AN ORDER! : Assign any member of your crew a re-roll. ENGAGE! : Any maneuver your helmsman makes automatically succeeds. GIVE HER ALL SHE'S GOT! : Boost your ship's weapon damage and shield capacity by 1d8 for today. This boost may bring your shields above their normal capacity.

So, what should the Khan be doing?
As the Helmsman, I'm thinking about maintaining distance or getting to long range.

Do you think we should try and take a potshot at someone with torpedoes or something?

Long range is going to look weird, for the reasons outlined in the thread.
I sent a PM to Ender to see if I can fudge my attack rolls and auto-miss. I can probably get away with it once or twice before people see me never hitting, if I'm allowed to do it. The Chief's MAC cannon looks painful, so avoiding that will be good...

Well, I can either take some shots (Which would be a bit premature), cover someone else (Screw them), or evade.
Also, as pointed out in the thread, there's not much point in moving range yet.

Hmm no luck on the attack roll fudging sadly. That would've been handy.

Um. Coded messages. Nono. They're in the OP? That could get The Ender in a LOT of trouble.

Yeah; no coded messages, please. I'd love to include it, but the forum rules are the forum rules.
...Out of curiosity, does anyone know why coded messages aren't allowed?

Why not have the Encyclopedia send one of the crew members a notice that unusual transmissions were sent? It can have the same effect.

The Khan will be among the ships potentially targeted by the Venusians, yes.

Even better. Have it say that an unusual transmission was sent from the ESN Williams.

Yeah, I forgot about the coded message rule. I think there was some game where people were openly talking to each other in some code in the middle of the thread and Thanatos didn't like it? The idea is to make sure that there's no cliques or similar who protect info that way, maybe. I don't really see my suggestion as a violation of the spirit of the game, but I don't want to break any rules.
I like the idea of the intercepted broadcast from the Williams. I'm thinking about some ideas for what it could say. My initial idea goes something like this:
"A strange broadcast was picked up between the Williams and the Labius. While the transmission was in a particularly unusual dialect of Venutian, it was no match for my translation software and vocabulary database. The message is displayed here, words which had no clear translation match have been changed to their nearest Terran equivalent and placed in brackets:
'Attention <people>!
We the <strong helmets> are not your <stranger>! We have taken control of the <wind direction>. There is little to fear! I have trained our guns on the <foreign king,> and request your assistance. The <controller> here is not your only friend. Many of us believe in the cause.
Do not allow yourself to <fail>, soon we will <derisively laugh> together.
Venus forever!'
This message could be combined with the Kahn zigging in front of the Williams guns tonight. That should throw the whole crew into suspicion, and give us an excuse to pull to long range and repair. If the Williams goes down first, it'll keep our cover up also, since we won't have a Venutian sympathizer beam aboard with us. What do ya'll think?
